Back to school? How to avoid tooth decay in term-time
Did you know that tooth decay-related pain is a major reason for kids missing school? Staying at home ill with pain or traipsing to the dentist can mean a lot of missed hours in the classroom and even more trying to catch up on missed school work!
With the school holidays coming to an end, let’s be honest – as parents, we’re relieved! Things will soon go back to normal as we finally regain the welcome familiarity of routine.
Unfortunately, while we’re at the office and our children are spending time with friends or family, it can be difficult to monitor what they are eating. As a parent, your best course of action is to do as much as you can to prevent problems before they arise. Make sure that your children eat a healthy breakfast and a balanced lunch that makes them feel fuller for longer. Nix the sugary drinks and try and ensure any sugary foods are eaten at mealtimes, rather than in between – this will limit the frequency of acid attacks on their enamel during the day.
And, while it’s still the holidays, you’ve got plenty of time to enlist the help of the in-house paediatric team at Happy Kids Dental – we can offer tailored advice on everything from nutrition to teeth cleaning.
Our friendly team is trained to get children on board with oral hygiene from the get-go, banishing your brushing battles at home and creating positive experiences of dentistry that mean they really do care about looking after their teeth. Far better to be prepared before term begins than to have them miss school because of a dental visit or tooth pain.
By bringing them for regular check-ups, you will avoid the following:
- Tooth decay
- Abscessed tooth
- Tooth fracture
- Damaged fillings
- Infected gums
Prevention is key when it comes to the maintenance of your children’s oral health. If left too long, tooth decay can lead to more serious conditions, which may lead to greater financial expense and a more daunting procedure for your child to have to endure.
Tooth decay can lead to the following:
- Intense pain
- Dental caries
- Loss of a tooth/teeth
- Dental abscesses
We can help you avoid all of the above – and, at our theme-park-style practice, they’ll enjoy the experience!
