In children and young adults of this age, the aim of orthodontic treatment is to straighten teeth, correct any remaining issues with the bite and set up a ‘smile for life’.
Here are some common orthodontic issues that can be treated with braces:
Overly crowded or crooked teeth
Overly crowded teeth can get worse over time, and result in severely crooked teeth. This crowding can lead to plaque accumulation, tooth decay and an increased chance of gum disease.
Spacing issues and gaps between teeth can lead to gum problems (due to lack of protection by the teeth), periodontal pockets and increased risk of periodontal disease.
Deep bite can lead to gum problems or irritation, and/or wear on the lower teeth, and can cause painful jaw and joint problems.
An underbite can prevent the normal function of front teeth or molars, which can lead to tooth wear. It can also cause painful jaw and joint problems.
Open bite can cause poor or painful chewing, and even speech impairment. It can also lead to greater issues like temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD)
Crossbite causes one or more upper teeth to bite on the inside of the lower teeth. This can cause wear of the teeth, gum disease and bone loss.
There are a few treatment options available:
At Happy Kids Dental we offer a full range of teen braces, including fixed and removable solutions.
- Conventional metal or aesthetic clear braces.
Elastic ties are required to hold the wire to the bracket. For orthodontic patients who choose to make fashion statements with their mouths, colours are really heating up. From soft pastels that coordinate with a wardrobe to bright hues for celebrating holidays or expressing school spirit, the colours appear on the elastic ties that bind the wires to the brackets.
Total treatment cost is £3500.
Invisalign is a series of removable clear aligners (much like the teeth “trays”) that are worn day and night to align the teeth. They are almost invisible and allow children to speak clearly and smile without visible braces. Since the aligners are removable, compliance is absolutely necessary to get a great result, so it takes a persistent patient for the success of Invisalign.
- Invisalign® Teen Braces.
Invisalign® Teen uses the same technology as Invisalign®, with a few added features designed exclusively for teens and kids. Because a busy teen’s lifestyle can make it easy to forget to wear the aligners, Invisalign for teens has a blue compliance indicator that fades with wear. Read more here.
Total Treatment cost is £3500
- Lingual braces.
Lingual braces are hidden from view on the backside of the teeth. They are customised to one tooth at a time to follow the contours of your child’s teeth for comfort and performance. Because each tooth is fitted individually with lingual braces, it is possible to choose the teeth which need straightening.
Total treatment cost is £8000
Once the braces are removed and the teeth look great, a retainer must be worn indefinitely. This keeps the teeth in their new positions and ensures they don’t go back to their pre-treatment place.
We offer all types of braces for teenagers at our Happy Kids Dental branch in Marylebone, as well as at our funky clinic in Chelsea that’s exclusively for teens - American Smile Teens.
